Scientology May Be Banned In France

World: Europe - French scientologists guilty of fraud

A court in the French city of Marseilles has found five members of the Church of Scientology guilty on fraud charges over courses offered by the organisation.

The former leader of the church in southern France, Xavier Delamare, was sentenced to two years in jail, including 18 months suspended, and fined 16,000 dollars for manipulating people into giving money to the church.

He will not return to jail because he has spent 17 weeks in pre-trial detention.

Four more people were given suspended prison sentences ranging from six months to a year, and another two were found not guilty.

The charges against the seven defendants - who are alleged to have obtained large sums of money from fellow sect-members by fraudulent means - date back to the late 1980s.

They went on trial last September accused of accepting money for dubious treatments organised for church members.

    'Purification' at a price

Some of these included 'purification' sessions and vitamin cures sold at excessive prices, according to the prosecution. The case grew out of complaints by a former scientologist.

Charges of violence and illegally practising medicine have been dropped.

Prosecutors in the case had sought more severe sentences.

They argued that "beneath the religion there is a clear, institutionalised business drift" in which money was extorted by psychological manipulation. They said people with real psychological problems had been targeted.

Scientology is officially listed as a dangerous cult in France, and the case has led to renewed calls for the organisation to be banned in the country. Monday's verdict is a setback for the group's efforts to be recognised as a religion.

    Popular with Hollywood stars

Scientology - founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard - teaches that technology can expand the mind and help solve human problems.

The sect has many high-profile Hollywood adherents, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

In the United States, the Church of Scientology is regarded as a religion.

The history of Scientology is rather intriguing. First starting with it's origins and the founder's connection to Crowley and Jack Parsons. Then their amazing ability to con rich people into giving them money and making them believe the silliest things...and their supposed mastery of the legal system, which they seem to manipulate into their favor for the most part. At least the French government is ballsy enough to really crack down on this organization.

This cracks me up for some reason.

    1. On one hand, I believe in religious freedom...it is what gives ME the right to NOT be religious, and I thank Jebus for that every day.

    2. On the other hand, scamming people is illegal and should be prosecuted.

    3. By that statement, all religion is a scam so in reality, ALL religion should be illegal.

    4. Finally, scientology is so blatantly elitist and evil that I can't believe people buy it.

Secret Sun Blogspot: V is for 'Vitamin Regimen'.

The latest episode of V did little to discourage my suspicion that the series is an allegory on Scientology.* The "vitamin shots" that the V were offering as well as the E-meter type diagnostic apparatus used to lure the "poor man's Tom Cruise" into their clutches are fascinating clues here. The paranoia and punishment of dissenters ties into the recent news stories on Tom Cruise's alleged violent threats against disobedient "managers" and the "Fifth Column" is eerily similar to Anonymous. The attempts to divide kids against their families (witness the storyline with Tyler and Lisa) is typical of most cults, and I can attest that Scientologist recruiters used that tactic on my friends and I when we wandered unknowingly into a "personality test" way back in 1983.

Scientology Charged With Slavery & Human Trafficking in California

"A formal complaint was filed in California (caged PDF) last week by John Lindstein naming David Miscavige and the Church of Scientology International as defendants. Lindstein claims that for sixteen years (from age 8 ) he was forced to work as a slave at Gold Base, a secret CoS site run by Golden Era Productions with 'razor wire, security guard patrols, surveillance posts, and three roll calls each day.' The pay was $50 a week. The allegations include 'Violations of wage and hour laws as well as unfair/illegal business practices actionable under California B&P 17200 Et. Seq.' and a complaint under the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution, which abolished slavery. Members of the group Anonymous praised the summons."
